Rolando Alarcón
In 1963 Rolando Alarcón began his career as a composer, which would bear notable fruits. Among his compositions, the slippery "Doña Javiera Carrera" and "¿A dónde vas soldado?" stand out, a song that sparked a curious controversy due to its anti-militarist content. In 1967 he represented Chilean singers in el Primer Festival de la Canción de Protesta, held in Cuba, and in 1970 he obtained first place in la competencia folclórica del Festival de la Canción de Viña del Mar, with the song "El hombre", performed by Los Emigrantes. Rolando Alarcón was homosexual, an orientation that he had to live most of the time clandestinely due to the hostility prevailing at that time towards the gay community. The Rare Book. A Gay History of Chile, by Óscar Contardo, collects some anecdotes and adventures that Alarcón must have experienced, even on the left, due to his sexuality. (Source 2)
He maintained a public relationship with José Luis Hernández, first voice of the National Folkloric Ballet (Bafona), who would later confirm to Alarcón's biographer that the two were a couple and that 'The Song of the Night' and 'Como el viento norte' had been dedicated to him (Contardo, 2012).
