Faraonika

Faraonika’s fate seemed written in the stars on a night in 2017, when she ran into trans performance artist Bianca Bárbara LaVogue outside Club Regia. At 20 years old, Sara Belazaras had put out a few songs under her own name and had plenty of others stashed away, but taking music seriously was still a distant thought. “She gave me the little push I needed,” she recalls in conversation with Indie Hoy. “She told me, ‘Don’t hold things back—you could die tomorrow, you’ve got to put your work out there.’”

Sara recorded a track titled “Faraonika,” nodding to a performance LaVogue had delivered that night proclaiming herself “empowered, pharaonic.” Yet the staple of Buenos Aires’ 1990s underground scene never got to hear the tribute, passing away shortly after their encounter. From that song on, friends and those close to her started calling her Faraonika, and the moniker stuck. “All of a sudden, more people knew me as Faraonika than as Sara. It wasn't really up to me—Bianca baptized me, and I didn't have much of a say.”

Señorita Novio

Inés Mauri emerges as one of the new voices of national indie pop and offers a repertoire marked by her lesbian identity. Her lo-fi-infused songs deploy quite confessional lyrics about the difficulties of love in the post-digital era, even more so for people in the LGBTIQ+ community.
