Mamonas Assassinas
The São Paulo-based group reached glory in the mid-1990s, selling nearly 2 million copies, a record in earnings. During those brief, intense, and frenetic months, the group’s fee reached about 50 thousand reais (nearly 50 thousand dollars), doubling, for example, that of Os Paralamas do Sucesso.
They were five friends from São Paulo who, for seven years, had been part of the group Utopia, with an excess of struggles and little, or almost no, glory. Until they formed a parody group that wasn't tied to any specific style (in tune with underground groups from the Argentine scene, like Aguante Baretta or Sometidos por Morgan), and although their core was always rock, they ventured into pagode, sertanejo, brega, heavy metal, and that oddity known as "children's songs without prejudice."
